Traffic flows will continue to change in areas around the new A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road (A555) over the coming weeks as drivers begin to re-route their journeys to take advantage of the new road.
We would like to provide reassurances that during this period of change on the local highway network Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Urban Traffic Control (UTC), which is responsible for managing traffic signals in Greater Manchester, is monitoring traffic flows and making adjustments to the new traffic signal timings to best manage traffic flows. TfGM representatives are on site reviewing traffic flows at the junctions and journey times are being monitored.
Works are currently underway to complete the installation of the infrastructure that will allow the timings of the new junctions to be coordinated and CCTV cameras are also currently being installed across the A555 to monitor traffic flows. Traffic flows through the junctions are expected to improve following the completion of this infrastructure as the timings of the traffic lights are better able to adjust to traffic demand.
The improvement works to the A34 as part of the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road project are nearing completion and are expected to be finished by mid-November. Now that the widening works and changes to the layout of the junctions are substantially complete, the remaining activities are the installation of the traffic signal infrastructure at the Stanley Green and A555 roundabouts. This includes the installation of induction loops to detect traffic on the approaches to the roundabouts that is being carried out over night this week and next due to the traffic management needed for the works. For details of the traffic management that will be in place, please see www.semmms.info/traffic .
The temporary pedestrian crossings at the Stanley Green and A555 roundabouts will remain in place until the permanent crossings are operational in mid November.
